Ulcer Treatment

Your Ulcer Treatment Specialist in Beverly Hills

Ulcers are open sores in the skin caused by injury or excessive pressure. Deeper tissues, tendons, and bone become exposed as the open wound continues to develop. Patients with diabetes, neuropathy, or vascular disease are at risk for ulcers because of their lack of sensation in the extremities.

Ulcer Treatment Basics

Ulcers originate from anatomical deformities, ill-fitting shoes, long periods in bed, or injury that breaks the skin. They form open wounds on the foot, and range in depth. Ulcers may be only surface-level, but if left to their own demise, become deep craters. Any medical conditions that reduce sensory ability or blood flow to the foot negatively affect detection of ulcers as well as the healing process.

An examination will allow Dr. Nik to evaluate the depth, infection status, and infection spreading of your ulcer. Treatment for ulcers includes removing unhealthy tissue and performing local wound care to speed up the healing process. A round of antibiotics is also necessary in cases of infection.

You may be fitted with special shoes or padding to reduce pressure on the affected area. More severe cases include ulcers that are especially deep, extensively infected, or slow to heal. In these situations, Dr. Nik may discuss surgery with you.

Our team will take preventative measures, too.

In addition to treating existing ulcers, preventative measures are also taken. Depending on the origin of your foot ulcer, Dr. Nik will give instructions and treatment plans to prevent future ulcers.

Benefits of Ulcer Treatment

01

Pain Relief

No matter how deep, ulcers cause pain in patients with functioning nerves. Deep ulcers are likely to develop excruciating abscesses, or pockets of pus, within the wound.

Infection Prevention

Any open wound runs the risk of bacterial or viral infection, which may spread. Infection can seep into the skin, nearby subcutaneous fat (cellulitis), or into the bone (osteomyelitis).

03

[Gangrene Prevention] working title

Without treatment, foot ulcers may become deeper. As they develop, tendons and bone can become exposed. If blood flow is completely cut off, you may suffer from gangrene, where the tissue affected will die and turn a dark color.
